  • The AQI announces its membership in the National Quality Forum.
The AQI is part of the Quality Measurement & Improvement Council composed of organizations that conduct research, education, or initiatives to improve healthcare quality, measurement and reporting. The Council also includes accrediting bodies, policy and quality centers, and information and data services providers. Members of this Council are entrenched in the everyday measurement, evaluation, and research of quality in healthcare. Their expertise in healthcare quality is essential to NQF members as they consider new measures, practices, frameworks, and guidelines for endorsement.
  • The AQI Media Report
The AQI Media Report is available on the Resources page. The report lists recent publicity and presentations on the AQI. Contact Jill Mlodoch (j.mlodoch@asahq.org) if you would like more information.

  • Quality Management in Your Practice
...has been added to the Resources section. This document is a nuts-and-bolts guide to establishing a quality management program in a typical anesthesia department or practice. It includes a list of suggested quality indicators which should be measured, and a list of the data points to collect. We would appreciate comments on this document from any interested parties.
  • AQI Presentation
Executive Director Richard P. Dutton, M.D., M.B.A will speak at the George Washington University School of Medicine on May 5 , as the invited Seymour Alpert Lecturer in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. The topic of his presentation will be 'Quality in Anesthesia: Do we know it when we see it?'
  • Check out the AQI Resource Page.
The 'Resources' button on the AQI home page will lead to documents that we think you might find useful. For starters this includes some basic facts and figures about anesthesiology, a list of standard complications and definitions developed by the Committee on Performance and Outcome Measures, and a broad outline of the 'data schema' of the National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry. This is another page to look at from time to time, because we anticipate adding to it regularly, as we share 'best practices' from across the profession.
  • NACOR is off the ground.
As of this moment four of our alpha sites are contributing case specific data to NACOR on a continual basis, dating back to January 1, 2010. With three months of data in hand, we are beginning work on the first quarterly report back to participating practices. We applaud these bold pioneers of Quality Improvement in our specialty, and urge others to join them in making the AQI a success. The more data we get, the more we will know. The more we know, the better care we will provide our patients.
